The Shishi Xinbao (時事新報) or China Times was one of the leading Chinese newspapers published in Shanghai from 1907 to 1949. In its early years it was affiliated with the Progressive Party (進步黨) which was a rival to the later dominant Nationalist party (國民黨). In May 1911 the newspaper merged with Yulun Ribao (輿論日報 Public Opinion Daily). The Shishi Xinbao continued long after its political patron declined and was one of the four main Chinese commercial daily newspapers in Shanghai (上海四大報 - together with Shenbao Shibao and Xinwenbao). From 1918 the Shishi Xinbao published an influential supplement Xudeng (學燈 The Light of Learning) that was important during the New Culture Movement for its anti-traditional stance. Important editors of the newspaper include Wang Jianqiu (汪劍秋) Zhang Junmai (張君勱) and from 1917-1924 it was run by the Chinese liberal philosopher and public intellectual Zhang Dongsun (張東蓀).
